Monday eats were a great kickoff for my week of healthier habits! I started with the usual yogurt mess. This one contained 2 figs, a cubed granny smith apple, frozen blueberries & half cup kashi.
For lunch I heated up my favorite Lean Cuisine ravioli bowl and crunched on some green peppers.
I started feeling snacky again not long after finishing, so I made a nice steamy rooibos tea with some cinnamon hazelnut Coffee Mate & splenda. This was a nice treat!
Workout fuel today was a Clif Mojo bar, the peanut butter pretzel flavor! I have been dying to try this bar. I definitely loved the pretzel bits throughout, but for 200 calories, I was surprised that it didn’t hold me over longer. Seriously, by the time I left the office, I was already hungry again!
Instead of finding another snack, I hit the gym for 60 sweaty minutes on the elliptical. FUN!! Haha, not really, but it’s always nice to return to exercise after a few days off. For dinner, I made a veggie omelet that turned into a veggie scramble with half cup egg beaters, baby bella mushrooms and spinach. On the side, I made sweet potato fries, roasted brussels, and a few roasted red onion pieces. This was very filling and delicious!
I finished up with the last Grey’s I had taped and then Julia & I watched Gossip Girl. DRAMA MAMA!!! Afterwards, I got into bed with a book and a little snack — 1/4 cup kashi, 1/4 cup oaty o’s, 1% milk, and 2 strawberries, sliced. I have been craving cereal lately, which is pretty unusual for me. This seemed like a much healthier way to handle that craving, rather than curling up in bed with a book and the whole box LOL.
I’m feeling pumped about the week ahead! I KNOW I can keep this up if only I TRY, TRY, TRY :)

Hi all! Sorry I’ve been MIA this weekend. Not only was I too busy having fun with my mommy to stop and blog, I am also computer-less at the moment, so I am making the most of my lunch break today!! I have some photos of the weekend noshing, but lost focus on Sunday, oops :)
Okay, rewind. Friday morning I made a nice yogurt mess, MMM!
Thanks to my awesome coworkers, I was able to get home for a late lunch with my mom, YAY! We ate outside in the sunshine. I made spinach quesadillas using 2 La Tortilla Factory tortillas with 1/2 cup cheddar (split between both tortillas) and several handfuls of spinach. On the side, we split a 100 cal pack of Wholly Guacamole (must buy more of this stuff!!) and a red pepper. Plus some lime chips for crunch! For dessert, I had the last of the munchkins…they were calling my name so I just polished them off.
Then we walked around my neighborhood, chatting, shopping, and picking up final groceries for the big meal. We got home JUST in time to change before everyone got to the apt. Luckily, my friends know I am perpetually late (I get it from my mom HAHA) so they weren’t surprised to find me half ready as they trickled in. Luckily I had lots of wine and easy apps ready to go so everyone was happy :)
Here are some photos that I snapped, post-digging in! Besides the wine, I put out some brie, goat cheese, cheddar, multigrain crackers, pepper & poppy seed crackers, french bread, lime tortilla chips, pineapple salsa, and lemon cilantro hummus.
For dinner I made TJ breaded eggplant, chicken sausage (the apple kind got a wee bit blackened, whoops!), salad (w/tomatoes, fresh motz, roasted brussels, basil, EVOO, kosher salt, pepper), and whole wheat pasta (w/tomato sauce, red peppers & artichokes). Everything was so delicious!!

We finished up with dinner around 10 and then my mom, Steph & I decided to head across the street to Lola’s. I wanted my mom to experience one of their killer martinis! Steph and I got chocolate and my mom tested key lime pie. YUM.
Saturday morning we woke up to clear blue skies! My mom has been cursed with bad weather every time she comes out to visit, but this weekend was gorgeous. I made her some hazelnut coffee and a yogurt mess, which she loved (of course).
After breakfast, we suited up and headed out to the beach! Yes, the beach! I ended up wearing my yoga pants and sweatshirt the whole time, but since the weather is so much warmer here than back east, it felt hot to my mom and she got a nice (pink) glow. I stupidly forgot that my yoga pants are capri, hence I would need sunscreen on the bottom half of my legs…I have the most awkward burn line right now!!
The beach was pretty empty and super relaxing. I started the new Jodi Picoult (review on that later) and we had 6-inch turkey Subway sandwiches that we picked up on our way to the water. There is something about eating on a beach that makes any food taste a million times better!
After we realized we were getting burned, duh, we headed over to Santa Monica and the Third Street Promenade for some browsing. We split this key lime pie Larabar.
AND I introduced my mom to the glorious Coffee Bean Ice Blended! This one was my first of the season, but I love getting them on weekends in the summer. I ordered us both half vanilla/half mocha light, which comes out to 110 calories of pure icy bliss.
We had a great time roaming the streets and checking out the stores on the Promenade. Snapped a few cute photos too!
By the time we got back home, we were ravenous! I wanted to make sweet potato fries but couldn’t wait to eat, so we decided to start with a little appetizer plate. First, some leftover bread and cheese.
And the last of the pineapple salsa and pepper & poppy seed crackers.
I also opened a bottle of my favorite Honey Moon wine for us to share. We each had one delicious glass.
For dinner I made the last two chicken sausages, which we split. This was my first time trying the apple chardonnay ones, which I have heard so many good things about, but I like the cilantro ones much better! We also had sweet potato fries, roasted onion, and v. crunchy green pepper strips.
After dinner, we snuggled up on the couch and watched a movie. We paused it halfway so Julia & I could pick up some froyo while my mom packed up her suitcase. We decided on Yogurtland (the best!) and I had the usual PB, chocolate & pistachio w/a bunch of fruit and chocolate toppings. My mom had irish mint, vanilla waffer & chocolate topped with M&Ms and fruit. I think we have another Yogurtland convert on our hands!!
Sunday morning, we woke up super early so I made us some v. hearty applesauce pancakes to share before her flight. It was so hard saying bye to my mom. I had a great time with her but it was just SO fast. Still, we decided that it’s much better to see each other just for a day or two rather than not see each other at all. It’s hard for both of us to take long vacations (my mom teaches, so she can’t really do it until the summer) but we didn’t want to wait until July so we went with a long weekend instead. Seeing my mom reminds me of how much I miss home and my family and the east coast. It’s hard because I know that I have the option to move back, always, but besides my family, there’s nothing really there for me. I’m not ready to live in suburbia, and I don’t want to be in my hometown with the same people from high school who are all doing the same things. I don’t know if I will live in California forever, but I can’t see myself leaving right now, and that’s hard sometimes.
So Sunday was spent in sort of a funk. I had a bunch of food that I ate at random times all day, basically while sitting on the couch watching tons of Private Practice & Grey’s episodes. I had a yogurt mess, crackers w/hummus, Perfect 10 bagel with Better N Peanut Butter, leftover tomato/motz salad, Starburst jellybeans, and tortilla chips. A lot of snacks & a lot of carbs…
Then Julia came home from work and dragged me off the couch and to a BBQ with some of our friends. Sorry I don’t have any photos of dinner, but we grilled up some steaks and turkey sausages and had pasta salad & coleslaw on the side. We also played some Wii bowling (which I love) and tennis (which I am not so good at)! Late night, I had some cereal w/milk (no Puffins this time!) while finishing off the Jodi Picoult.
Overall, I liked this book. It reminded me a LOT of My Sister’s Keeper, which was better than this one. I enjoyed the story, but really didn’t like the ending. Without giving anything away, the last chapter just seemed so unnecessary. The ideas behind the book were sad enough that I didn’t need that final push at the end. If you like Jodi Picoult though, you will enjoy this one I’m sure.
Sunday I had a lot of time for thinking, mostly about personal/relationship stuff. But I also had some thoughts about food, and I kept coming back to the same thing — I need to try. I have been “trying” to lose the winter weight I gained but realistically, I am not actively making any real, continuous efforts. I’m not sure what I need to do to make that click inside my head, but I have definitely been snacking and overeating and it has developed into a pattern. I really want to nip this in the bud. I am hoping that over the next few weeks you will see less pictures of ice cream and huge dinners and no more late night confessions of eating whole boxes of cereal. I just don’t want to go down this road. There are too many other things in my life that I can feel good about, and having an extra 5 lbs sitting on my waistline is currently consuming too much of my mental space and crowding out all those good feelings. This is something that I need to, and will, work on! Rather than making this a negative thing about my jeans getting tighter, I want to make it a positive thing about feeling strong and healthy again.

It’s funny, these awards are like a much more fun version of email chain letters LOL. Okay, on to Thursday’s eats! For breakfast I had the usual with cherry berry blend, 2 figs, 1/4 cup kashi, half cup puffins, half banana. Puffins and I are going to have to break up…more on that later, you will see!
We had catered meetings in the office again yesterday, so it was food overload. I decided to stick with my own lunch, but added this nice plate of fruit.
I also had a Perfect 10 bagel with 2 tbsp lemon cilantro hummus, half a green pepper, and the remaining crackers in my box of Kashi cheddar. I definitely could have used a few more of these, love ’em!
For dessert, I had a bite of this chocolate bread my boss brought back from her business trip to NYC. It was good!!
A few more grapes made it into my mouth right before leaving the office! I skipped the gym in favor of cleaning. In between wiping counters, putting away junk, vacuuming & washing floors, I nibbled on some snacks and read a new girly book. I had some v. frozen edamame — check out that ice!
Plus a cup of diet hot chocolate & coffee. This was okay. I think for now I will stick to either one or the other!!
I also paused the cleaning for some dinner. Last night nothing sounded especially appealing but I wanted to make sure I had some veggies, so I went with a spinach, mushroom, red pepper, red onion egg beater omelet with a sweet potato on the side. I got impatient while microwaving the potato and pulled it out too early so some parts were a lil tougher but that didn’t stop me from chowing down, of course!
After dinner I treated myself to the one thing that had been on my mind all night…yes, pb puffins. I started out with a nice, normal 1 cup portion. The real trouble started when I grabbed the box and settled back onto the couch with the box & my book and started to mindlessly eat…
I CAN’T BUY THESE ANYMORE!!!! Seriously, I bought the box last night and it is almost gone. I am so annoyed at myself, and it’s such a stupid thing to be annoyed over. I know that a little part of it has to do with the time of the month — I tend to have one week of insatiable hunger and cravings. But still, all that aside, I just have no control whenever I eat this cereal! Maybe this seems like I am making a big deal out of nothing but it just feels very indicative toward my food attitude lately. What do you guys do when you need to curb back your free-for-all eating habits? Any advice is seriously appreciated!!
I brought the box of puffins to the airport so my mom could taste them and get them off my hands! Of course, she loved them too :)
I was SOOOOOO excited to see her! I got to show her my apartment and kittens and roommate, which is awesome. It’s nice knowing that now when I talk about all of these things, she will know exactly what I mean. She also brought me a box of the much coveted Dunkin Donuts MUNCHKINS!!! Some of my most perfect days have included long drives along the ocean in the summer early mornings with a DD iced coffee in one hand and a glazed donut in the other. HOWEVER, for some crazy unknown reason, there are NO Dunkin Donut locations in SoCal. Which means that these guys are a very rare treat!!
P.S. I love that the slogan is “America Runs on Dunkin.” UMMM California is in America too people!!! Okay, calming down now haha.
I made some nice homemade rooibos tea lattes for me & my mom and we cuddled on the couch and watched The Office & 30 Rock while munching away. Okay, much of the munching was by me, I must admit. And no, we didn’t eat all of these but I definitely had more than my fair share!
Tonight I am having a big dinner at my place so my mom can meet all my girls out here and vice versa! I have stocked up on wine, cheese, bread, hummus, crackers, chips, salsa, pasta, chicken sausage, eggplant cutlets…we will definitely be feasting tonight! I think there are going to be 8 of us all together. I’m so excited!!! Last time my mom was in LA, I had maybe 2 girlfriends? I’m so grateful to have met so many awesome people since then and I can’t wait for them to meet her!!!!

Yay for humpday! I woke up this morning and had the usual, today with blueberries, mango, half cup kashi and 1/4 cup oaty-o’s.
I broke into a crispy batch of green pepper slices around noon to fuel me through a few more phone calls.
I was planning to pick up Subway for lunch but couldn’t get the idea of a really good burrito out of my mind…At first I was thinking of going to Chipotle, but then I checked out locations for Poquito Mas and found one less than two miles from the office. Score! PQM’s tagline is, “We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can.” They make all their mexican food minus the lard, msg, canned beans & veggies, etc. Everything is fresh & cooked to order. I haven’t been in ages! I got the Nature’s Grill Burrito, which is a flour tortilla stuffed with grilled eggplant, mushroom, zucchini, red & green bell pepper, red & white onions, and black beans. I had mine w/o cheese or sour cream. I can never taste the cheese anyway when there are so many other ingredients! I also had some fresh chips and pico de gallo on the side. There was a great outdoor seating section; luckily I always keep a book in my car so I just hung out in the nice weather and read!
On the way back to the office, I passed Big Chill, a froyo place that’s gotten many rave reviews from friends. Even though I was pretty full, I couldn’t NOT try it, right?! I got a small chocolate/PB. YUM! I love ordering non-fat, low-cal frozen yogurt and being rewarded with such a delicious treat :)
Usually I eat a smaller lunch and then have a workout fuel snack, but this big lunch kept me going until dinner. Actually, it kept me going from 12:30/1 when I ate until the end of work, a trip to the library, an hour at the gym on the elliptical, and shopping at FOUR different grocery stores. Crazy! Sometimes I wonder if I should eat more at lunch so I don’t have so many urges to mindlessly snack. I had to go to two Trader Joe’s because the first was out of PB Puffins and that’s all I wanted. I definitely had a few handfuls on the drive home!! By the time I sat down around 9:30, it had been 9 hours since lunch…it held me over pretty well but I was beyond hungry by that point. For dinner, I ate a bowl of the puffins + half banana and a yogurt mess with cherry berry blend, the other half banana, and a few more puffins. I had been planning on something more veggie oriented but this is really all I wanted.
I also had 3 of these figgies. LOVE!
I am super exhausted right now. I might have to skip the gym tomorrow because I am stressing over my apt looking perfect for my mom and I know that if I go to the gym I will really be pushing time and won’t finish what I want to do around the house. Crossing my fingers for a somewhat NOT crazy day at work tomorrow!! I’m just happy for all the good eats in store for Thursday now that my fridge is restocked :)

I didn’t get to post last night (too busy scrubbing pink paint off my kitten!! yes, seriously) so this will be quick. Tuesday breakfast I had the usual yogurt mess, this time with a granny smith apple, blueberries, 1/2 cup kashi & 1/4 cup oaty-o’s.
For lunch I decided to give the other Healthy Choice meal I bought a few weeks back a try. I have been eating way too many pre-made foods lately but I have NO bread or tuna or turkey or soup or anything portable that doesn’t require a lot of time (and a stove), so it’s frozen diddies for now. I added extra broccoli and leftover roasted brussel sprouts for volume and greens. This meal was pretty good, but again, I should just never by frozen chicken entrees. I could only eat some of the chicken so it just seems silly to get them!
After lunch, my office decided to stock up on Easter candy. I am now in easy grabbing distance of chocolate eggs, Reeses bunnies, Reeses PB cups, Kit Kat bars, and a few more things I can’t remember. I helped myself to one Reeses and then ate a Z-bar so I wouldn’t keep snacking on chocolate. This is the first time I’ve tried this flavor and it was okay. I don’t dislike them but I don’t really love them either. I think I still have chocolate chip left to try…
Since I knew I wasn’t going to get to the gym, I just sipped on some tea late afternoon.
I have been seeing sushi ALLLL over the blog world, so tonight I made it my mission to get some! I have been craving a good spicy tuna SO badly. My roommate and I got four rolls to share: spicy tuna, california, hot night (shrimp tempura, cucumber, masago w/spicy tuna & eel sauce on top), and shrimp soybean paper roll (shrimp, soybean paper, avocado, masago, asparagus). This sushi is all so fresh and HUGE and delicious!! I could eat this every night.
Cheers to baby glasses of hot sake! We eked out the last bit of the bottle to share.
Followed by some shelled and sea salted edamame.
We started off nicely plating everything and then plowed through! We ate outside while chatting (love my roommie!). We finished all the sushi except one lonely end piece of the hot night roll. Too stuffed for another bite :)
After dinner we watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall while working on the canvases we’ve been painting to hang in the living room. We are so close to finishing! I will definitely post pictures when we are done. We took a break to eat some more Dreyer’s Double Churned with magic shell.
THEN the kittens ran through the plates of paint and one got it ALL over her. We bathed her with kiddie shampoo, which she HATED and she is now pink and smells like coconuts. Poor Mookie! The paintings got put aside to finish tomorrow night and I went to bed with a nice chamomille tea. Now it’s humpday!! YAY! Hope everyone is having a good one :)

Ah Monday, why are you such a pain?? This morning I had yogurt with mango, blueberries and half cup kashi.
I could barely make it to noon for lunch!! In fact, I didn’t make it to noon. I dug into carrot sticks and 1 tbsp lemon cilantro hummus around 11:45.
Then I had a Lean Cuisine veggie ravioli bowl. Ate this in 5 seconds!!
I felt like eating allllll day long. I broke into some pretzels and a diet Pepsi. I keep my cans of soda in my car so that I only drink one when I am really craving it and willing to leave the office to go down to the garage to get it. Today was one of those days! I ate pretzels until I finished the can. Probably 3 times what’s here!!
Finally I put the pretzels away. I held off a bit longer before digging into my pre-workout fuel — my FIRST Jocalat bar!! I decided on Chocolate Coffee for my taste test. This bar was YUM! I loved the slight coffee taste. There was a nice light chocolate flavor but of course I wouldn’t have minded if it was a little more chocolate tasting :)
I would definitely buy these again, although cherry pie & key lime are still my absolute faves!! I wish I had held off a little while before eating this because I was hungry again by the end of the day but didn’t let myself snack any more. Good Kate!! I hit the gym for a very sweaty 60 minutes on the elliptical. I pushed the resistance up extra high and burned baby burned! I grabbed the quickest thing I could as soon as I got home, green pepper with 1 tbsp hummus.
Eating this held me over long enough to actually roast some brussel sprouts and heat up the rest of my pizza, a slice of fruit and a sliver of potato. Now it’s all gone! These were YUM.
After dinner I let myself splurge with a little more ice cream. Baby scoops, I swear. Deeeelish! Plus 15 minutes of weights while watching GG. I’ve been slacking soo badly with weights and my arm muscles have gone to mush!! Definitely want to work on these so I can get back my sexy sculpted arms LOL.
Ahh GOSSIP GIRL, you are getting so good!!!
Only 3 days til my mom gets here! This week better go quickly — I’m so excited :)
