May 2009

Friday morning, I mixed up breakfast a bit with a Perfect 10 bagel topped with 1 tbsp. Chocolate Dreams and 1 tbsp. cherry jelly and 1/2 sliced banana. This breakfast held me over forever!! Must be all the protein in that bagel!

My boss just returned from a press tour in Europe, where he made sure to visit Laduree in Paris to get some famous, fresh macaroons to bring back for us! Here is a picture from the company’s site of the macaroons in all their glory…

Gorgeous, no?? The colorful box of sweets got quickly devoured and there were only a few left when I walked by at only 10:30 so I quickly snagged a coconut one and a piece of the pistachio before they all disappeared! My boss also gave me a bite of her caramel one, which was my favorite of the three. Sorry my photo is not nearly as pretty!

I worked through lunch and ended up making a Lean Cuisine veggie ravioli bowl and added a Green Giant Immunity Blend veggie mix to fill me up. It was awesome as always!

The day was a long one. I snacked on a cinnapple but I was too busy for a photo — I’m sure you can picture it by this point!! I worked at 110% capacity until the clock hit 5:15 and then I peaced out. I got home and met up with my sweet love Julia!!! She has been nannying in Laguna all week and I’ve been all on my lonesome 😦

We settled down for some gossip and I had a little more than half this glass of my favorite white, Honey Moon.

Julia convinced me to get off my butt and we walked to Trader Joe’s to pick up some supplies for dinner — gorgeous, gourmet veggie pizzas!!  I brought a piece of red pepper for the walk to hold me over until our late meal.

Back at the apt., I made half white/half whole wheat dough and rolled out 2/3 to make one big pizza. My half had tomato sauce, cheese, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, red onions and fresh basil. Julia topped her crust-less half with tomato sauce, extra cheese, eggplant, zucchini, meatless meatball crumbles, red onions, basil and olives. Before and after!

We added lots of crushed red pepper, which totally made the pizza!! We ate our halves while watching the season finale of Gossip Girl. A lil behind, I know. I was dying when Chuck brought Blair her favorite treat from Paris at the end — the same macaroons from Laduree that I ate today!!!!!  I wish we didn’t have to wait for next season to see what happens 🙂

Last night I got the baking bug so I decided to make some chocolate chip cookies for Stephanie’s birthday. Best part about baking for someone else — you still get to taste test!  I had one of these cookies hot from the oven with a huge glass of milk, plus some raw cookie dough of course!!

Three Things for Friday

  1. Added extra veggies to my Lean Cuisine
  2. Measured out the cheese for my pizza
  3. Walked to the grocery store instead of driving

I woke up late again and was racing to get out of the apt. I keep turning my alarm totally off instead of hitting snooze and then falling back asleep. Oops! I was only a few minutes late though, so no biggie. I was v. ready for my regular yogurt mess when I got to the office. Look at all that pretty pink!!

Today I wore my new (err old hand-me-down) Gucci heels I was telling you guys about!! Aren’t they sexaay?!

At lunch, I resurrected the Perfect 10 bagels. YUM!!!!! For anyone who doesn’t know, they are 140 calories (20 fat cals), 2g fat (no sat or trans fat), 9g fiber, and 18 GRAMS OF PROTEIN! If I can’t have a local NJ bagel, these are second best!!! I used 1 tbsp. Better ‘N Peanut Butter and 1 tbsp. PB Chocolate Dreams to top my toasty goodness.

I also had a mango on the side.

Thursday is Farmers’ Market day! I got some good fresh veggies with E. while we vented about work and grabbed iced coffees.

I couldn’t even drink half of this cause it gave me a weird caffine overload headache. I made everyone jealous instead with my piping hot cinnapple. Seriously jealous…I had to share!!

After work I hit the gym for a quick 30 minutes on the elliptical. I cut out early so I could get to the library and Fresh & Easy. I needed to go to Target too but I felt weak in the knees and just wanted to eat.  How could I not dig into my Farmers’ Market goodies for a yummy bake?? This bowl of roasted deliciousness included eggplant, zuccini, carrots, red onions, sweet potato, portobello mushrooms, and red peppers, topped with fresh basil, lemon pepper & salt. It was even better than it looks!

Dessert was a two part snack. Can you guess #1???

Yup, a little date with the cow. I was still feeling snacky so I had some fruit. MMMers.

Right now my tummy feels weird like I could be hungry but I think my stomach is just hating on me. Can you believe tomorrow is Friday?! My boss comes back tomorrow and I have a lot of work to get done. Then it’s the weekend again already!!I can’t wait til it gets hotter here so I can start beaching it up.

Three Things for Thursday

  1. Skipped the chips side with lunch
  2. Brought a Fiber One bar to eat before the gym but had my apple instead
  3. Made my veggie dinner without any sauces or oils (au naturale baby!)

Since Stephanie is the person who got me into reading food blogs in the first place, I thought she deserved a special post for her birthday!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLIE PIE!

out on the town

If Steph and I were dating, our story would be the cutest.  Since she is dating Josh and not me, it will just have to remain the cutest friends story. Steph and I went to college together in DC and had the same French class together my sophomore year, her freshman year. We became best class friends…you know, the person you always sit next to and discuss all the details of your life with but you never really see outside of that one class?? Well, the next year I went to France for study abroad and of course Steph went her junior year but that was a year later so we never had class again and we totally lost touch.

Then, the year after I moved to LA, Steph was finishing up an internship at a PR firm in DC and decided that she was moving out to the west coast with her boyfriend, who was planning to attend med school in LA.  The people at the company suggested she get in touch with their intern from the previous year who had also moved out to California after graduation. YES, that intern was me!! How weird is it that we had the same job?! Anyway, so I get an email from Steph, followed up with a message on my Facebook after she saw my photos saying, “I thought your name sounded familiar; did we used to be best friends in French class?!”

YES Stephanie, we DID!!! We reunited in LA at the Griddle for massive pancakes and it was love at first sight and the rest is history. Steph is the person who motivated me to quit my last PR job that I hated so much when she went back to school last summer. She’s also the person who got me reading food blogs and eating such weird and interesting foods!! I can also thank Stephanie for my pizza stone, some amazing cookbooks, my reading of the entire Twilight saga, Easter brunches, my purple Kaitlin purse AND an awesome, amazing supportive friend.

Love you Steph!!! Can’t wait to celebrate! Poor girl is so busy studying but I will drag her out hopefully tomorrow 🙂

I’ll be back tonight with some foodie recaps for your drooling pleasure!

Have to make this somewhat quick because I have some writing to do for work…breakfast was the regular.

For lunch I had a big ole plate of health. My coworkers probably think I’m a little crazy! I topped the other half of my acorn squash with 1/4 block tempeh and a Green Giant 100-calorie steamer pack that contained snow peas, potatoes, and red peppers.

I feel healthy just looking at this stuff :)

I feel healthy just looking at this stuff 🙂

After lunch I did some more magazine reading and discovered The Food Network magazine. I’m seriously in love…the recipes in here look awesome!!!

Pretty sure you guys needed to see these chocolates!!!

Pretty sure you guys needed to see these chocolates!!!

Then Crystal Light had a party in my water and dyed that baby RED! MMM neon water, my fave.

I also had the best PB Fiber One bar for a pre-workout snack.

I braved traffic to hit the gym for 50 minutes on the elliptical. It felt good to sweat it out a bit!! After the gym, I did some hungry grocery shopping. Luckily I made a list and more or less stuck to it. The one extra thing I did buy was my Perfect 10 bagels!!!! Have you guys missed those or what?!?!

I wanted to make a little salad but my lettuce was slimy (ick), and then we are out of balsamic vinegar, so I ended up just putting together a bowl of grape tomatoes, mushrooms, red & green onions, basil, kosher salt, and a Misto spray of EVOO. Pretty good!

I used the last 1/3 of my homemade pizza dough to make a calzone with tomato sauce, cheese, mushrooms and onions.  Love that!

Just to make sure I am keeping my meals on track, I counted the calories for this calzone…approximately 400! Awesome! I can only imagine how many more calories it would be if I had ordered it from a restaurant, right?!?

Right now I have to do some press release writing for work tomorrow; hopefully they won’t take too long! I’m planning to have one of these when I take a little break…

Three Things for Wednesday

  1. Wanted sweets after lunch but I refrained with mah Skinny Cow in mind
  2. Made it to the gym
  3. Measured out all the ingredients for my calzone

Welcome back to the real world everyone! This morning I woke up and found out I left my portable coffee mug at work on Friday…oops. Think that might stop me?! Nope, Godiva coffee was getting drink. drank. drunk. no matter what! So I took a regular mug into the car and possibly spilled all over my pants. It was so worth it 🙂

Breakfast was a yogurt mess! Surprise, surprise.

The whole team went out to lunch today at Breadbar. It’s hard to cut back on restaurant eating when you have to do it for work! I seriously never noticed how often we go out to eat, but I think I’m really getting a handle on this stuff!!! Today I ordered a bowl of the vegan white bean broth-based soup and half a grilled chicken/grilled veggie sandwich on whole wheat bread. When I looked around the table and saw the cheesy french onion soups & grilled cheese sandwiches, I gave myself a nice pat on the back 🙂

Today at work I got to read through some fun food magazines.  I had to stare down this little beauty in Women’s Health!!!

The article was pretty interesting though. It was all about dealing with food temptations.  “Research shows that willpower is a kind of mental muscle, and like any muscle, it can get stronger.” Don’t you love that?? I am SO working out my willpower muscle!

Lunch held me over all afternoon, but I got a little snacky around 4 so I had a cinnapple.

I intended to hit up the gym after work but home was calling my name so I headed there instead.  Dinner tonight was more portobello…I had bought two and the other one was just staring up at me from the fridge!

According to the Mayo Clinic’s website:

Dietitian’s tip: The meaty-textured portobello mushroom is the perfect stand-in for a hamburger. One portobello mushroom has about 30 calories and no fat or cholesterol. By comparison, a 3-ounce hamburger patty has 235 calories, 16 grams of fat and 76 milligrams of cholesterol.

Sweet! Good thing I totally LOVE portobello mushrooms. I forget about these for a while but I’m sure you will be seeing them more often now that I’ve rekindled the love affair 🙂

I topped my bello with 1 tbsp soyaki sauce, then placed the whole thing under the broiler for 5 minutes on each side. How easy is that?! For the side, I baked some sweet potato fries, red peppers & red onions and heated up a bowl of lemon pepper sprinkled broccoli. Such a light, filling dinner!

For dessert, I had another Skinny Cow of course. Sorry that you guys are stuck with the same picture every morning AND every night!!

Three Things for Tuesday

  1. Ordered the vegan bean broth soup instead of french onion
  2. Got my sandwich dry, without the curry mayo
  3. Switched the egg bread/hamburger roll that came with my sandwich for whole wheat toast

Right now I am watching a bunch of new Lando episodes (Law & Order for anyone who doesn’t hear me call them that all the time haha) but am planning to put myself to bed somewhat early so I have more energy tomorrow.  Hope you all had a great day back after the mini-vaycay!!!

My coffee this morning was insanely delicious…I am officially addicted to this Godiva stuff!

I also had a really great yogurt mess while making some phone calls to the east coast. Three years later and the time difference still throws me off!

I cleaned for a bit in an attempt to have a productive morning! My kitchen was fairly spotless but now it’s a mess again of course. Making lunch at home on a Monday made me SO HAPPY. It’s so much easier to eat a delicious and healthy meal when I have time to COOK one. Usually I am scrambling around in the morning to pull something together, so it was awesome to take my time and make exactly what I was craving. I had lemon pepper seasoned chicken, broccoli, and half a baked acorn squash that I salted and then stuffed with baked cinnapple cubes.  The salty/sweet combo was OFF THE HOOK!

After lunch, Julia and I took Kate the Dog for a long walk down by the beach. We parked in Santa Monica and walked down and through Venice Beach. The crowds were out in full force! It was an amazingly gorgeous day.

We walked for over three hours and my legs were total JELL-O by then! Getting into the car was heavenly. Julia blasted girly music and we sang along at the top of our voices. It was one of those afternoons 🙂

I was so hungry when I got home! Katie Jo came over and I made quick & easy killer sandwiches. The woman baking bread at Whole Foods suggested a rosemary garlic baguette, which I topped with portobello mushrooms, onions, red peppers, and a sprinkle of light mozzarella cheese.  I’ve been planning to make these portobello sandwiches all week and they definitely didn’t disappoint! Half a piece of corn on the cob made the perfect side.

Plus dessert 🙂

Having a three day weekend was awesome! I’m thinking we might need to institute a national 4-day work week, no?!? I will just work harder those days, promise!!

Three Things for Monday

  1. Made a Coldstone stop with Julia but didn’t order anything. I didn’t even take a bite of hers! My willpower is making an impressive showing this weekend 🙂
  2. Took a 3 hour walk
  3. Remembered I used real hearty-style bread to make my sandwich so I skipped the usual “insert carb here” dinner side

Right now I am munching on a little bowl of watermelon and wondering why I’m going to bed so late again! My boss is in Europe this week so work should be a little low-key. The new girl starts tomorrow though!! Our team is so small — I really hope she is cool and fits in with the awesome vibe we’ve got going on now. Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend!!

I love having this extra day! Sunday morning I woke up before 7 AM. Apparently my body definitely hasn’t gotten the weekend/vacation memo!! I made a cup of that gorgeous Godiva chocolate and a yogurt mess.

I finished my breakfast, posted, and caught up on your lives all before 8:30!  I spent the rest of the morning relaxing and doing too much nothing. I tried to lay down for a bit but didn’t fall asleep. Around 11, my stomach started growling but I wanted to head down to the beach for lunch, so I had half a Ginger Snap Larabar to tide me over. It shut up my belly immediately and ended up keeping me full for another 3 hours!

I headed down to Santa Monica & Third Street Promenade. This spot is one of my absolute favorite places in LA. The Promenade is filled with restaurants and shops and people everywhere.  Families, friends, couples — every body walks around in the sun, happy, enjoying the palm trees and bright, beachy colors. Yesterday, there were tons of people rollerblading, biking, tanning, picnicking, and flying kites.

I did a tiny bit of window shopping before stopping by Panera to grab some lunch. Then I drove down and found a nice sunny spot in a little park to eat my half Mediterranean sandwich (without the feta), black bean soup, and french baguette.

I ate my lunch while reading The Piano Teacher by Janice Y. K. Lee. I’m not too far into the book but I like it so far. It’s not amazing but it’s different…

I didn’t bring a bathing suit to the beach though, BOO! It ended up being pretty warm and I probably could have laid out for a bit. When I got home, I got to see Julia!!! Poor girl has been working like crazy. We made plans to go out with some of her friends for appetizers and drinks. In an attempt to fill my belly a little bit before going out, I had some watermelon and heated cinnapple cubes. These little snacks did a great job of keeping me from ordering a ton of food once we finally sat down for dinner at the restaurant!

Julia convinced me to walk the 2+ miles to the bar…she’s so good like that! At dinner, the two of us split a tuna burger topped with guacamole and onions, with some mixed greens on the side. I also had one glass of white wine and one glass of pink champagne, interspersed with a couple of diet Cokes. I am so happy that I ended up having just two drinks; if I had kept pace with the group, it would have been more like four or five, easily!

Afterwards, we dropped sleepy Julia at home and I went out with the boys to Barney’s Beanery. Sunday is karaoke night and the bar was SO PACKED. The singing was v. entertaining!! And by entertaining of course I mean ridiculously funny.  We played some pool and I majorly sucked. The guys ordered a couple pitchers of beer and even though they kept my glass full, I only had maybe half of one glass all night. I’m not really the biggest beer fan so it was easy to sip slowly! I had 2 1/2 drinks in the 6 hours I was out at the bars…I’m so happy about that!!! It usually would be so many more in that long time span.

I got home around 2 AM and made myself a bowl of yogurt with some blueberries and 1/4 cup Kashi Heart to Heart. I don’t want to make nighttime snacking a habit but I definitely needed this to get to sleep because my dinner was so light!

Today I slept in until 8:30 — big steps, right?!? I see another yogurt mess on my horizon, with more of that delicious coffee!! Hope everyone is enjoying their extra long weekend. I think this might be the first time I’ve ever said YAY MONDAY!!!!!!!

Three Things for Sunday

  1. Ate a light snack before dinner to fill me up BEFORE the restaurant
  2. Split a tuna burger with Julia & didn’t eat any of the fries or pizza on the table
  3. Broke up my drinks with diet Cokes
